Grants for Complex Driving Solutions

Do you need an independent driving solution which will enable you to access a vehicle with specialist controls, whilst remaining in your wheelchair?

Do you need to drive from your wheelchair or transfer onto an adapted driver seat and need specialist controls to be able to drive?

Or maybe you need hi-tech driving controls, such as foot steering, in a standard production car?

As these vehicles and adaptations are individually tailored for you, they can be expensive.

Our Complex Driving Solutions Grants can help with the additional costs that come with these vehicles.

All grant applications are means-tested to ensure we support those most in need of financial help and so that we can help as many beneficiaries as possible with the charitable funds available.

We will look at your financial situation, including household income and savings, and if we believe you are able to afford to make a contribution towards the vehicle yourself, we may make this a condition of your grant award.

What we offer

Through our Grants for Complex Driving Solutions Programme, we currently focus help towards the cost of:

  • Advance Payments towards the lease of a Drive-from-Wheelchair solution
  • Advance Payments towards the lease of an internal transfer solution - needed when you access the vehicle using a wheelchair or scooter and transfer to the driving seat.
  • Adaptations which are necessary for a Scheme vehicle (could be a standard production car, WAV, Drive-from-Wheelchair solution or internal transfer solutions) - where the total cost of adaptations and dealer options needed cost more than £10,000.

We have a team of Mobility Driving Advisors based across the UK, who can assess your needs or if any changes are needed to Scheme vehicles during their lease period.

For your convenience, these assessments are often carried out at your home. We’ll discuss your needs with accessing and travelling in the vehicle safely and comfortably.

Who can apply

Our Complex Driving Solutions Programme is currently prioritising funding towards people who can join the Motability Scheme and will receive the most benefit by using the vehicle on a regular basis.

You will need a minimum term of 12 months remaining on your award. This is due to the bespoke nature of these solutions which incur a longer lead time to build to your specification.

The cost of these vehicles is very high, so to ensure that we are providing grants for maximum benefit, we prioritise funding for disabled people who will find the use of a vehicle essential to support them with one of the following:

  • Paid employment - you work for an average of 12 hours or more a week;
  • Perform a volunteer role - you perform volunteering work for an average of 12 hours or more a week;
  • Attending full time education or training - and you need a vehicle to allow you to access it independently;
  • Caring for another person - you are responsible for the care of dependents, for example a spouse or child with disabilities, elderly relatives or young children, and the use of a vehicle is essential to provide the care they need.
  • In exceptional circumstances - you are in a situation not listed above but your circumstances make the use of a complex vehicle conversion essential for your everyday mobility. Consideration will be given to how long you have been using the Motability Scheme as well as frequent medical appointments where you are unable to use hospital transportation.

We are not able to award a grant if you have already ordered your vehicle. This is because when you place an application for a grant, our Case Managers will consider your individual circumstances and confirm which vehicles the charity is prepared to fund based on your mobility needs, not wants.

Grants are awarded in line with our policies and following thorough consideration of the information submitted in the application. All grant awards are final, except in cases where additional compelling information is provided. Applications that we consider do not meet our funding priorities will not receive grant funding.

To be considered for a grant from the Complex Driving Solutions Programme, contact Motability on 0800 500 3186 and keep your National Insurance number at hand. Children aged 3-15 years old have their National Insurance number or reference number at the top of their Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance award letter.

We will discuss what you need and if we think we can help, we will send you an application form (digital and paper versions available). You may speak with one of our business partners first, as there may be alternative options available to you.

We are experiencing unprecedented demand and we are working hard to process applications as quickly as possible. Once your application has been received, there may be a delay before a dedicated case manager is able to contact you to discuss it. You can help us by providing all of the information requested when the application was sent to you, and by only contacting us if a member of the team has been in touch. Please note that you cannot place an order for a vehicle until you have received your grant decision.
